Pope John II Rose

This is a 9 inches by 12 inches oil painting of the Pope John II rose.  It took a couple of years to get a good looking rose on this bush to bloom.

The bush was plagued with so many problems the first couple of years. I will have to say it was well worth the time and effort puttering after this rose bush. My husband and I planted this in the early summer then a heat wave hit. The poor bush looked like it was going to keel over every day with 100 plus degrees weather.

This past spring the rose bush had spectacular blooms.

Now this painting is in the process of drying.

Texas Paradise

This West Texas Ranch house is a show stopper when I drove by it. I knew I had to do a painting of this home. I kicked up the ranch house a few notches by adding climbing roses around the white columns and adding some crepe myrtle bushes around the house.

Old Kelly's Cottage

In Buffalo Gap, Texas, there is this rickety quaint boutiques place to shop. About ten years ago, the artisans wanted to make this place into something like Old Tucson of Art. This was Old Kelly's Gallery Studio Cottage in Texas. Old Kelly was famous for his breath taking Old Western paintings. He reminded me of the generation of Buffalo Bill Cody and Wild Bill Hickok. He brought his 2 horses and 5 dogs to work with him.  He was busy training a pup to act like an old dog when someone came into his gallery. The young pup would look up to see if he had permission to greet the customer. He would gently tell the pup to put his head back down. The pup crossed his front paws and put his sulking head back down on his front paws. I always enjoyed talking to Kelly when I had a chance to go there.

This "Old Texas Boutiques" is now looking sad with some of the old rickety shops not having any renters. I thought about renting a studio there. When I get there, the mosquitoes attack!

Spring Lake

This painting is titled Spring Lake. This is a 12 inches tall by 9 inches wide oil painting. The grass is still you. The mountain in the background hasn't melted its snow. The flowering trees are blooming. The water is still icy cold. This is a place where I would love to go fishing and catch some nice trout. This is on eBay

The Bright Color version of the Old Masters Method.

This is a 11"x14" Oil Painting on Gessoed on hardboard. This time I used jewel toned oil paint colors instead of the brown tones. This is mainly a transparent paint painting. The only opaque color I used was white.

This is a very time consuming method.

Challenges....

I've been working on this painting with the Old Masters Method. It's not done but this painting was more about learning than turning out well. The stamens need to be added and a few dark veins in the flowers then I'm going to call this done. I will be doing another painting with the same vase and flowers. The background color will be changed.

This painting I did a value sketch on paper. Usually I sketched my paintings in paint with contour lines in very thinned down blue, alizarin crimson or purple oil paint. So getting out the sketch book and doing a value drawing first is different for me.

Now one of my comment buddies commented he doesn't remember ever learning this method in college. It doesn't surprise me at all. The old master methods of teaching art have been cast aside from majority of colleges.  I wished colleges kept these old traditional method classes instead of discarding them. I believe there is room for both styles at colleges.

I recently found a website that is promoting old traditional learning art at approved Atelier schools. Wow, if I was younger I would be heading off to one of these schools.

Still Lifes - Fruits and Vegetables in the Old Masters Method

These are 9"x12" oil paintings.  It was my first time trying out the old masters geezer method. Starts out with painting several layers of transparent paint. The last stage is putting on the opaque paints. This method brings out the oil paints luminosity.

I remember the first time I visited this pond. It was very hot and humid day. The Park Ranger told me to park at the visitors parking so I could see the scenic route. I was sweating more than broken water main.

Iris Flower Painting

 

The students want to paint an iris for their class in August. I painted this on an 18"x24" canvas that is ready to hang. The students have set for their painting lesson goal is to learn how to make "frilly froo froo" flower petals. The day was spent trying to figure out how to communicate "frilly froo-froo" onto the canvas for them. Guys to understand froo-froo think of lace or freshly clipped poodle.

Mill Town

This painting is about ready to start its journey to its new home. It is a real pleasure working with the father and son team.

Texas Cowboy

I don't know who this is. I was hoping to take fabulous cow faces pictures at the fair. This was the first cow face I saw that day. Turns out when I had the filmed developed, there was an arm in front of the cow face. Otherwise, the cows were in their stalls showing off their rears.

Cougar

Vintage Painting. I took a picture of a cougar at Northwest Trek in Washington State which I turned into a painting. This was one of my earlier works of painting animals.  The wolves in the next partition were being very active so the cougar had its ear back listening to what they were doing while looking at people.

This painting I had up for sell at an art gallery. The gallery owner stuck this painting in the window. This young man age 11 would run to the gallery after school and just stare at this painting for an hour or two before heading home. I used to make the drive up to this small town to give art lessons on Saturday morning once or twice a month. The Saturdays that I was there, he didn't show up. The Saturdays I wasn't there, he would be standing on the outside art gallery just staring at it. I was going to give him this painting. The art gallery closed several years ago.

This young man biggest desire a few years back was to be an artist. He doesn't know.. but when I visit an local art competition for children/Teens, I look for his work. I stare at it.

This afternoon I asked my dog if she had her dinner. She walked to the refrigerator and gave me this look, "No, I didn't have dinner yet". She watched me get out her canned food then walk over to her dry dog food. I am about ready to put her food in her bowl when my better half said, "She had dinner".
She gives me this look, "You've gotten this far, how about a little canned food in my bowl anyways?"
